ust south of Hilo and just past Keaau and going
almost north now (the Big Island is Round) there is Panaewa
Rainforest Zoo on Hwy. #11, a small zoo but worth the time
especially if you want to let the kids run for awhile. Take some
bread along for the peacocks.
Hilo is an old port town, but much of the port was taken away by a tidal wave in 1960. The tsunami deluged the waterfront, sweeping an organ console out the stage door of the Palace Theater, depositing fishing boats in the street like parked cars and taking out totally, many blocks of the business district and dock area. One lady was carried out to sea on her screen door and returned to the beach several hours later.
In it's place are some beautiful gardens and green vistas. Located on the windward side of the i sland, Hilo has rampant tropical growth, waterfalls, leafy tree ferns, and enough flowers to build a large rainbow. The rainfall is well over 100 in (254 cm.) annually, making Hilo the wettest city in the USA.
Things to see in Hilo:
The Lyman House Museum, Rainbow Falls, Suisan Fish Auction,
Farmer's Market, Liliuokalani Park (A MUST), Historic Downtown Hilo and
Banyan Golf Course, one of the most reasonable in Hawaii.
A recent
addition to Historic Downtown Hilo activities
is the Pacific Tsunami Museum, housed in what was formerly the
First Hawaiian Bank Building, fronting Kamehameha Avenue. Also
Boiling Pots, a little off beaten track, but ask a local,
you'll be glad you did.
